Idea For Our Ancillary Products.

This is a photograph we took from our reshoot on Saturday. Although this is the only picture we have of the two together I think it is a really nice photograph. We used photoshop to get rid of little blemishes and the hook on the door. It looks far more effective in black and white than it did in colour because the wall behind them was brown and didn't look very nice, and their skin tones look the same now, before the boy was green (from powder paint he didn't wash off) and the lighting made Morgan appear orange.

Studio Hair and Makeup.

Last night we set up a studio and got our artist to sing the song all the way through. This means we have another location for our video. She was wearing a peach coloured dress, although the song is called 'Little Black Dress' we wanted to show that she isn't all about her social life, the black dress is for parties and going out, but she has a different side to her, the cute and girly side which is the side of her her fans mainly see.

It was our first time uploading a video to YouTube so we both learnt new skills, which I’m sure we’ll put into practice as we develop more shots. In the description bar we included a link to the email Sara Bareilles’ manager sent us in response to our request for copyright to the song.

Final Cut Problems.

Problems

We had some problems with Final Cut Pro X because we didn't create the new file properly therefore it didn't save as it should. It was only a very rough cut using the shots that we had gotten. We are planning to have another filming session very soon and a photo-shoot for our digipak.

After filming our first few shots we realised the camera cuts them short, we need to re-shoot some shots and make sure to leave time afterwards so none of the real shot is cut off.

We made a physical board of photos with a mixture of our own photos and photos from the internet. We can clearly now identify the colour schemes which will be used throughout the video and within our digipak and other ancillary products.

Updated Ideas Following TA Research.

Updated Ideas

Since our TA research we have changed a few things;

• Half and half of the artist singing/narrative
• Artists will look quite voyeuristic in the costumes
• She'll be made up through up the entire video 
• We have some more shots that match the lyrics
• We also have shots with deeper meanings
• We changed the woodland location to a garden because it makes more sense for her to be burning things in a garden.

TA Feedback

We gave 5 of the surveys to 16 year old boys and 5 of the surveys to 16 year old girls. Although it is a female aimed video, we wanted to see if the males would be more likely to watch the MV if the artist was looking voyeuristic. The first question asked how much of the artist singing would they like to see. Both males and females mostly answered "half and half" so we will use this to influence our creative decisions. Next, we asked whether they would be more likely to watch the video if the artist was attractive, 100% of males said "yes" and all but 1 female said "yes" too. We asked if they prefer videos that match the lyrics or videos that make you think about the meaning. The majority of males said they'd prefer it to match the lyrics, whereas the majority of females said they like visuals that make them think more about the meaning. All males and females said yes to special effects in videos. As for locations, we had a mixture of answers between; industrial areas, woodland, studio, home, and busy public areas.

The little black dress is a polysemous sign because it has a negotiated reading (Stuart Hall). To different people it means different things. To some people a little black dress is quite posh and elegant, to others it is more voyeuristic and to others it is depressing and linked to funerals. I want our audience to get an elegant, voyeuristic feel from the little black dress.

Symbolic Signs in Our Video.

Symbolic Signs

In our video we will have a few symbolic signs, such as our star wearing red lipstick, red lipstick is symbolic because it doesn't link to anything really, people interoperate it from their life experiences; to some people it means a woman is strong and confident, to others it could mean she is dangerous. It will be used in our music video because it is very voyeuristic and we want our star to look sexy. 

Another symbolic sign we will have in our video is our star burning some black dresses. This indicates she is getting rid of the past, without directly telling our audience that. They hopefully will interoperate it in the right way because usually when you burn something you don't want it anymore.

The powder paint fight will also be a symbolic sign as it links to our lyrics 'Paint it with the colours of everything I ever was.' From this We want our audience to get the connotation of changing things, changing the colours of people is trying to change their personalities.

Symbolic signs are signs that have no direct link to what they represent, these mostly depend on life experiences.

Some examples of symbolic signs are; 

White doves = peace

Red rose = love

Indexical Signs in Our Video.

Indexical Signs

In our music video an indexical sign would be when we have our star crying. Crying is connected to heartbreak but it is also linked to other emotions such as sadness and happiness. With the lyrics of the song 'I'm gonna dance until you're all gone' it makes it clearer to our audience that she is crying because of a heartbreak.

The little black dress is also an indexical sign because collaborated with the makeup, the hair and the music we get a voyeuristic feeling to it instead of a depressing one.
